REEVES COUNTY, Texas - June 28, 2024 by Daniel Alvarado — The spirit of Texas liberty shines brightly as Judge Leo Hung of Reeves County is honored with the prestigious Captain Albert Martin Award by The Alamo Letter Society. This recognition celebrates Judge Hung’s unwavering commitment to public service and historical preservation, echoing the legendary determination of Captain Albert Martin who carried Colonel William Barrett Travis's impassioned plea from the besieged Alamo in 1836.
Judge Leo Hung, originally from Hong Kong and a pillar of the Pecos community, has been pivotal in bringing a piece of Texas history to life at the Reeves County Courthouse. His leadership as Chairman of the Alamo Letter Society for Reeves County has culminated in the installation of a magnificent 24-inch by 36-inch bronze plaque, a replica of the historic document displayed at the Alamo.
"This award is not just a recognition of my efforts, but a tribute to the enduring spirit of Texas," Judge Hung remarked at today’s dedication ceremony. History enthusiasts and patriots alike gathered at the courthouse in Pecos to witness the unveiling of this significant plaque, marking Reeves County as one of the few in Texas to house such a symbol of heritage.
The Captain Albert Martin Award, represented by an equestrian sculpture of the brave rider himself, symbolizes the Society’s mission to educate future generations about Texas’s fight for freedom and the principles cherished by its forefathers. This initiative, spearheaded by visionary individuals like Judge Leo Hung, ensures that the legacy of the Alamo and its timeless message of resilience will resonate throughout Texas for generations to come.
In the words of John Vick, President of the Alamo Letter Society, "Judge Hung exemplifies the same spirit that drove Captain Martin, carrying the torch of Texas history forward with each passing year."
The Alamo Letter Society continues to expand its mission, driven by the vision of young Texans like Slone McNutt, whose simple yet profound question sparked a statewide movement to commemorate Texas’s heritage. As we reflect on Texas’s journey towards independence, Judge Leo Hung stands as a testament to the enduring values of determination, perseverance, and duty.
Judge Hung expressed his gratitude, stating, "The Alamo Letter Society is a mission that I am proud to be a part of as it is an honorable representation of Texas independence."
The Alamo Letter Society invites the community to join in celebrating Judge Leo Hung's remarkable achievements and his dedication to preserving Texas' historical legacy.
